**7 leftover foods you should toss in the garbage rather than risk eating**:
1. **Leftover rice** 🍚 — Rice can develop *Bacillus cereus* bacteria if it sits at room temperature too long. If it has been left out for more than about 2 hours, throw it away.
2. **Cooked chicken or turkey** 🍗 — If cooked poultry has been refrigerated for more than **3–4 days**, it's safest to discard it.
3. **Leftover seafood** 🐟 — Fish and shellfish spoil quickly. If they've been refrigerated for more than **3–4 days**, don't take the chance.
4. **Food with mold** 🦠 — Don't simply scrape mold off soft foods such as cooked vegetables, bread, yogurt, or leftovers. Mold can penetrate beneath the surface.
5. **Leftover pasta with sauce** 🍝 — If it has been sitting in the refrigerator for longer than **3–4 days**, toss it.
6. **Potato salad or egg salad** 🥔 — These are particularly risky if they've been left out at room temperature for several hours. When in doubt, throw them out.
7. **Anything that smells, looks, or feels suspicious** 👃 — A sour smell, slimy texture, unusual color, bubbling, or a swollen container is a good reason to discard it. **Don't taste it to see if it's safe.**
**Simple rule:** If you don't know how long a leftover has been sitting out or how long it's been refrigerated, **it's better to lose the food than risk food poisoning.**
